JAPANESE MEISEN-KIMONO

KIMONO EXHIBITION RECOMMENDATION

Kimono exhibition & culture exchange.
Round Tower of Copenhagen | 17.06 – 20.08, 2023.

As a texture surface design specialist, with a background in both the fashion and textile industries, I had been looking forward to viewing the exhibition Kunst der Klæder – ‘Art for Wall and to Wear’. It takes place in the beautiful library hall of the Round Tower of Copenhagen, where I have also previously exhibited myself.

Here you can experience a world full of inspiring colours, compositions and patterns, in the form of 96 aesthetic Japanese silk kimonos from the private collection of Henriette Friis. The unique pieces originate from the heyday of the Meisen-Kimono between 1910 and 1955, when Japanese kimono artists drew inspiration from Western modernist art, such as Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Cubism. The display tells the story of these unique kimonos – and the mutual cross-country inspiration between Europe and Japan.

The exhibition is highly recommended!
